Mumbai
Now that I am home in beginning to settle in I am going to try to re-count my trip to India. I will start with Mumbai before Gotcha Day.
My mom flew in from Buffalo and Tuesday, November 4 you spend the next couple of days just preparing ourselves for the long journey. Our flight left at 6:30 PM on Thursday, November 6th. That afternoon my two good friends Stephanie and Susan came over to play with us and help prepare our nerves for the journey. I am blessed to have both of them in my life and they have both adopted sweet little girls from India so we will forever be connected. My best friend Erika picked us up from the airport and we were on our way around 3 o'clock.
The flights were long and uneventful. The last leg of the flight from London to Mumbai was very cramped and we both struggle to be comfortable. Neither of us slept more than a few hours the entire trip. Only arrived in by you were exhausted in our luggage took over an hour. By the time we got to our hotel it was 3 o'clock in the morning. We stayed in Navi Mumbai, which the locals called new or mini Mumbai. It is like an annex off of the main city but it was very close to the orphanage. We both fell asleep right away and actually slept till 11 o'clock the next morning which is unheard of for both of us. The hotel itself was average and that the cleanest but the people within the resort made it truly a five-star experience. The waitstaff, especially the manager, were amazing and spoiled us for every meal. My mother is not a fan of Indian food and we were both worried that she would starve to death but every night the manager would prepare her a meal not on the menu and I am happy to say she enjoyed most of it. Saturday we were both extremely jetlagged and since we did not get in until three in the morning on Saturday we spent the entire day lounging around in the room.
On Sunday we decided to venture out to mall that was across the street. I wanted to get some traditional Indian wear and they had a store that had Inexpensive Indian clothes so we went there. We have been told not to venture out too far as the hotel is not in the best area so the mall was the only place we could go. We enjoyed Pizza Hut for dinner which was a nice change. On the way back from the hotel a little boy who was filthy but gorgeous around the age of seven kept following us begging us for money. He kept motioning to his mouth for food. We kept saying no and walked very quickly back to the hotel. By the time we were in the room my mother and I were both sobbing it was very emotional. We did not leave the hotel the rest of the day or night. We later found out from the restaurant manager that these children are forced by their parents to go get money and then the parents use the money to buy alcohol to get themselves drunk. Money does not help the children at all. It was heartbreaking. We also have several dogs across the street from the hotel one of them why named snowy and snow we was very sick and I would pray for him every night. In the parking garage directly across from our hotel room we would see for homeless man sleeping every night and hanging their clothes up to dry. Every morning they would get up and go to work. Mumbai was very very
dirty and very sad. We were not prepared for the amount of poverty and slums that were everywhere on the street no matter where he looked.
